Day 6. Wickenburg to Prescott, AZ. 60 miles and 5,840 ft climbing

Another stunningly beautiful day, starting out chilly in the high 50’s, but the sun heated up to mid-60’s. We started climbing right away out of Wickenburg and had two significant climbs; first was a 7.5 mile climb to Yarnell Pass, which was outstanding. Because of construction, cars and truck were held back nearly our entire trek up, so it was remarkably quiet with perfect roads. We snaked up through switchbacks which appeared endless.

After the Pass, we had an amazing downhill, I put the brakes on @37 mph, since we were winding back and forth with cars and motorcycles sharing the road. After stopping for ice cream at the Country Corner Store (in the middle of nowhere) we started up the 9.4 mile trek to the summit @ 6,100 ft and raced down through the Ponderosa Park-it smelled wonderful.

Prescott is a charming town with a lovely square. It became well known as a gold and silver mining town in the 1800’s.

I’m getting to know my fellow 24 travelers, from the Bay Area, CA to Minnesota to four buddies from GA and several from NJ, DE, NH, and MD. The youngest (by far) is a 40 yr old woman who was a Backroads guide. Average age is 63 but all are fit and accomplished. Most retired but still running marathons or bike racing, etc. Some are more normal like me!

I’ve had engaging chats while riding, about Pelotonia. All are amazed at what’s going on in Columbus and how remarkable the Pelotonia story is unfolding, and almost each of my new friends have their own story. Carol, who has become a good friend, lost her husband to cancer one year ago. The anniversary will be the day we reach the beach in Boston, where her kids will meet her to celebrate. Everyone has asked to contribute-pretty awesome! I’ve also been able to share our Reb story-another great discussion about how cool Columbus is!

My friend, Barb Waters is also raising funds for Veterans, particularly for PTSD, and her jersey prompts salutes from so many in these small towns. It is so lovely!
