Day 17. Las Vega to Tucumcari, NM. 110 miles and 3,917 ft climbing

Beautiful blue sky day in Las Vegas. Our first SAG was on the side of the road at a dilapidated gas station, which was the “coin toss” scene from No Country for Old Men. We had a wonderful downhill ride through the Canadian Escarpment, which is a landform between the southernmost tip of the Rockies to the High Plains-it was breath taking and a really fun downhill.

Once we descended from the Escarpment @ 6,300 ft to the Plains @ 4,000 ft, it was all cattle farms, although we didn’t see much cattle. We arrived in Tucumcari, population 5,140 and very hot (92 degrees). It’s basically a stop over place for tourists/travelers. This is our last night in New Mexico, which is the 5th largest State in land mass, but the 35th in population. Tomorrow, we cross over to Texas!

  1. Well done my friend. Know the area well because of Durango being so close and our frequent trips to Albuquerque.

Have fun – know you will – and stay safe
